Notts commits to ‘Being Our Best’

Leaders representing Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s 9,000+ members committed to ‘Being Our Best’ last weekend during a series of lively presentations and informal networking sessions which established the organisation’s strategy for the next five years.

Held at the Jubilee Conference Centre on the University of Nottingham campus, the event was attended by 50 Guiders from across the county and was the first opportunity for new County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst to make clear her vision for her term in office. Orlando Hampton was the facilitator for the day and guest speaker was Janie Hampton, author of ‘How the Girl Guides Won the War’, who presented a fascinating take on the history of guiding and its continuing role in empowering young women everywhere.

‘Being Our Best – or BOB as we’re beginning to affectionately call it – is a simple statement which embodies everything about guiding today,’ says Jackie. ‘It’s a pledge to deliver a bright future to thousands of girls and young women, and is a commitment from the leaders, helpers and back-room staff to get even better at what we do. That means not only developing as a management team and creating more opportunities for all our members to fulfil their potential but also ensuring that everyone has lots of fun along the way!’

The ‘BOB’ strategy has been developed by Girlguiding UK following consultation with leaders and adult supporters as well as Rainbows (girls aged 5-7), Brownies (aged 7-10), Guides (aged 10-14) and members of The Senior Section (aged 14-25). It addresses the hopes and expectations of young women for the coming five years and encourages greater support for adult volunteers in terms of training and mentoring.
