Brownies Raise Money for Children's Ward

It was a proud moment for Brownies in Arnold on Thursday (8 October), when they handed over a cheque for £500 to Nottingham Hospitals Charity.

Back in June, the members of 2nd Arnold (St Mary’s) Brownie Unit organised a sponsored event as part of their ‘Agility’ badge and decided to donate all money raised to the children’s cancer ward at Nottingham’s QMC.

To take part, the girls rose to the challenge of an obstacle course set out in the grounds of St Mary’s Family Centre in Arnold, demonstrating their agility and determination by completing as many laps as they could in half an hour.

‘The sponsorship money has been trickling in to Brownie meetings since the start of the new term, and when we totalled it up we were amazed to discover it came to nearly £500!’ says Assistant Brownie Guider Alyson Leeks. ‘The girls really wanted to go to the hospital to present the cheque themselves, but as there are 22 of us we didn’t think they’d let us all in at once so we invited Nottingham Hospitals Charity to come and collect the cheque instead.’

Accepting the giant cheque was Fundraising Manager Nick Lawford. ‘We’re so grateful to the 2nd Arnold Brownies for raising such a fantastic amount of money in support of children’s cancer services at Nottingham’s hospitals,’ he said. ‘Generous donations like this help support children at every step of their treatment and care, transforming hospital facilities, funding new equipment and providing important services like play workers and complementary therapy. Thank you to the Brownies for helping to make life better, brighter and less scary for young people with cancer, and their families.’

The Brownies received a certificate for all their hard work – see below)
