Brownies go the extra mile for Macmillan

Retford Brownies go the extra mile for Macmillan Cancer Support!

Brownies from Retford are celebrating after successfully ‘doing the conga’ for a whole mile – and in the pouring rain! – to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Members of the 1st Ordsall Brownie Unit raised £458 between them as they completed the Mile for Macmillan challenge on Wednesday (17 May). All aged between 7 and 10, the Brownies were cheered on by family and friends as they started their conga at Goosemoor Lane Sports Field, continuing through Retford town centre and into Kings Park.

Brownie Olivia, 8, wasn’t at all bothered by the rain. ‘Doing the conga in our wellies was brilliant,’ she exclaimed afterwards. ‘It didn’t matter that we got wet!’

Jane Cozens, Leader at 1st Ordsall Brownies said: ‘I am so proud of all 17 girls who braved the torrential rain on Wednesday evening with smiles on their faces. Thank you to everyone who supported us with their generous donations, good wishes and who helped with the event on the day. We had great fun supporting Macmillan in this way and getting the local community together for such a good cause. All money raised will help fund vital Macmillan services in local communities right across Nottinghamshire, so that no one has to face cancer alone.’

1st Ordsall Brownies is one of over 4,000 Girlguiding units across the Midlands to join forces with Macmillan as part of a new charity partnership to raise £72,000 for people affected by cancer this year.

Pippa Lock Partnership Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support says, ‘I’d like to thank all the girls from the 1st Ordsall Brownies for taking the time to support Macmillan. We hope everyone involved enjoyed Mile for Macmillan and will keep supporting the girls as they try and raise much needed funds for people affected by cancer throughout 2017.’
