Two Notts volunteers step out for good causes
Three years since their trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, two Leaders with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire are making plans to embark on another long-haul challenge. Westdale Division’s Gillian Kendall and Attenborough & Toton’s Rebecca Scattergood intend to trek to Everest Base Camp in March 2019, hoping to raise funds for two good causes along the way.
Although they are paying for the trip themselves, the pair are securing sponsorship from friends and supporters which they will pass on to their chosen charities: Gillian is raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of her Dad, who passed away in 2014, while Rebecca’s charity is The Motor Neurone Disease Association as a tribute to her Mum, who died in July 2014.
‘Being a member of Girlguiding has always encouraged me to try activities outside of my comfort zone, and this adventure definitely falls into that category,’ says Gillian. ‘Everest Base Camp is located 5,360 metres – or 17,600 feet – above sea level, which is much higher than anywhere else I have hiked. The trek itself will be hard enough, let alone there being less oxygen to breathe!’
Rebecca is also relishing the challenge. ‘My parents loved travelling, so my Mum would have been very excited about me embarking on this trek of a lifetime,’ she says. ‘But for me, the biggest challenge will be the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Nepal, which is where we start the hike. It’s rated the most dangerous airport in the world!’
Both Gillian and Rebecca have been involved with Girlguiding since joining as Brownies: former Chair of the Elton Management Committee, Gillian has supported units across Nottingham city and Gedling through her previous role as Westdale Division Commissioner while Rebecca is Division Commissioner for Attenborough & Toton with specific responsibility for Rangers.
